In 1971, Kwame packed one suitcase — three shirts, his certificates, and his mother's groundnut soup recipe, folded four times at a bus station in Kumasi. He had never been on a plane. He arrived in London and watched his breath appear in the cold air for the first time in his life. That recipe is now framed in his kitchen in Atlanta.
